about

Autumn Island (1984) - Roger Reynolds

Commissioned by Solo Marimba Consortium with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Autumn Island was written for Gordon Stout. The work’s basic material comes from four short themes: chordal (38”), theme A (38”), theme B (23”) and ostinato (9”). The composer applies the SPLITZ and SPIRLZ algorithms to the themes to generate 13 minutes of music. These algorithms involve cutting the themes into tiny fragments and re-organizing them into different orders. Silence and ornamentation are added among the re-organized fragments to humanize the computer-generated musical material. Throughout the piece, recurring musical gestures from the four themes are embedded at different points of the work to bring coherence to the listening experience. (Aiyun Huang)

Roger Reynolds (b. 1934) won the Pulitzer Prize in Music for Whispers Out of Time. He was appointed as University Professor in 2009—the first artist to receive this title in the University of California.
