Désastre (2002) - Inouk Demers

When Aiyun Huang commissioned Désastre, I was faced with an interesting problem. So many works for solo percussion move compulsively from one group of instruments to the next. Since a single percussion instrument is rarely as versatile as a wind or string instrument, when we listen to a work for a single percussion setup a sense of inertia can settle in quickly, hence the apparent need to switch to a different group of instruments.

My response to this was to write a work where the overall timbre of the instruments was anonymous. Everything that goes on happens more or less homogeneously among all the instrument families. The instruments are all metal, with subtle timbral gradations between them. With such a setup it was possible to write lines that recalled the whole while forging a network of affinities within that whole.

The etymology of the word Désastre suggests something “fallen from the stars.”
